is it really almost the end of another month? It's still too soggy at Littlemeadow to plant anything, but I have been starting seeds at the house. There are broad beans, peas, self rooted garlic and some overwintered endive in the top (3x2m)polytunnel and some ridicchio in the bottom (4x2m) tunnel. Rather surprisingly, the parsley in the polyhouse has thrived through winter and I am harvsting small sprigs every few days for garnish.
It is a relief to find plants starting to sprout in the open beds again - chives, sage, the small rosemary I left out in its pot. The chard is still about, although some plants have withered. And there is a purple sprouting brocolli nesr the feed shed whose stalk has grown two shoots which may develop to harvest if left undamaged...it should have died!
There will be a few new crops this year (if they make it to harvest) to try. The most exciting will be mangelwurzels! I hadn't heard of them before, but I started buying my seeds from She Grows Veg, and they were advertising them. To my delight, I had a packet included in the advent seed calander I bought in the run-up to Christmas... so, yes, mangelwurzels. Look them up if you're wondering what the heck they are.
She Grows Veg, incidently, are a women run company who specialise in heritage seed that are grown organically. They are a little pricey but the quality and service are worth it.
